Sixteen Rotarians attended Club Assembly on July 27, 2022. After the rituals, we sat down to eat lunch and to enjoy each others’ company. President Nicole reviewed today’s Agenda.
Since Last We Met
Birthdays : Loren Polk July 17
Significant Other Birthdays: Bernadette Fisher July 26
Club Anniversaries: Tom Babic July 21,1981 41 years
On this day in history: 1974 The House Judiciary Committee recommended that America’s 37th president, Richard M. Nixon, be impeached and removed from office.
The focus today was on Article V. and DG Caroline started off with a quiz regarding amending the Constitution. Here is her reference and I quote: “The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the the several States, or by Conventions,,,,” She asked how amendments have been ratified by Conventions and the correct answer was zero. Continuing her quizzical method, she asked how many amendments have been added to the Constitution and the correct answer was twenty-seven. The last amendment was ratified in 1992: “No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened.” As usual, everyone found the moment fun and informative.
A Rotary Moment
President Nicole, quoting from the August 2022 Rotary magazine, presented the following statistical profile of Rotary membership: 1) Average age of male Rotarians-65; 2) Average age of female Rotarians-59; 3) Average age of Rotaractors, male or female-25; 4) Percentage of Rotarians who are women-24; and 5) Percentage of Rotaractors who are women-50. Members who completed the 2021 Survey reported that among what members liked about their clubs were: 1) friendship and fellowship: 2) learning new things from guest speakers; 3) interesting discussion topics: 4) opportunities to get involved in the local community; and 5) hybrid meetings allowing different speakers and allowing members to participate who have difficulty attending in person. The Survey also asked respondents what they didn’t like about their clubs: 1) virtual meetings without in-person interaction; 2) weak, unresponsive club leadership; 3) poor time management; 4) cliques; 5) exclusivity and lack of diversity: and 6) rituals and unneeded formalities like prayers and songs. President Nicole hopes we use this information this year in making some changes in the way the Club operates.
When it Rains, it Pours (Dollars)
The storm begins and DG Caroline opened, like the clouds, with five Happy Dollars in celebration of her twin boys’ 19th birthday on July 18th, the agenda and the running of the meeting, generally, and being reacquainted with Bob Blow. As a local shower approached, Karl added five Sad Dollars because instead of attending the filming of a Guy Fieri Food Network show in North Conway, N.H. with his vintage Corvette, he had to clean and set up grills on the Aldrich Public Library lawn. Along with a few rumbles of thunder, Tony tossed seven more dollars into the basket, happy that Guy Fieri is filming nearby and two young boys are coming up from Connecticut again to help out at the Annual Breakfast. Then in a cloudburst with thunder and lightning, Bob Pope threw in twenty Happy Dollars in celebration of the marriage of his son Michael’s marriage over the weekend and having his other son’s in-laws stay with them. Now that’s compatibility! He and Nancy are looking forward to being alone for a few days. Just as the storm was letting up another dollar came from Alona for a nice birthday week in Maine. The storm returned as President Nicole tossed another five dollars in the basket for a better day than yesterday, going to the cookout at Karl and Charlene Rinker’s and feeding her daughter Ellie. As the storm was ending Joe contributed seventy-five cents for the sad news about the rise of polio. He also reminded us of the musical celebration of the life of his uncle and fellow Barre Rotarian, Dick Shadroui at the Barre Opera House on Saturday, August 13, 2022 at 7:00 p.m.
Breakfast at the Aldrich
Saturday, July 27, 2022 the Barre Rotary Club, after a two year hiatus because of Covid-19, resumed its Annual Breakfast with proceeds going to the Aldrich Public Library. Under a mix of sun and clouds and big white tents, the happy and hungry crowd was served eggs, ham, sausage, French toast, pancakes and all the trimmings that go with breakfast. Rotarians, volunteers and politicians cooked, served, sold and collected tickets, poured coffee and bused tables. This year the number of meals served was 887. Here are a few of the more impressive statistics of items consumed: 80 pounds of sausage, 225 dozen eggs and 208 pounds of bananas. Everyone seemed to enjoy the event and its return as part of the Heritage Festival.
