A Moment of Silence
President Caroline began today’s meeting with a request for “a moment of silence” in remembrance of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 when Islamist terrorists carried out four coordinated attacks against the United States.
She then led us in recitations of the Pledge of Allegiance and the Four Way Test.
Earle’s Pearls
President Caroline: Read a “thank you” from Kelly Drew, District Governor, for the gift that she received from our Club during her recent visit.
Announced a “live streaming” (witticism courtesy of Patrick) river clean up event sponsored by the Nature Conservancy. Check out their website for details.
Told us to be on the lookout for a letter from Bob Pope regarding our Legacy Fund.
Announced a Rotary After Dark event on October 2nd at the home of Charlene and Karl Rinker in lieu of our noon meeting; a presentation on the Rotary Foundation will be featured; details to follow.
Announced that Willem Lange will be at our noon meeting October 30th to read Edgar Allen Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart; costumes encouraged.
A Motion is Made Karl moved and Jim seconded that $5,000 from the Operational Account be added to the recent $20,000 donation to our Club. We would then make a total donation of $25,000 to the Barre Community Relief Fund. With an objection made, the following amendment was offered. Tony moved and Tom seconded that the request be brought to the Board of Directors for consideration before presenting it for a vote of the full membership. Amendment passed unanimously.
Happiness and Sadness
Tony: One HD for the successful bowling event; another because his son and a friend are coming for a visit; and a SD because his “honey do list” keeps getting longer.
Tom gave a Sad Dollar in remembering that Linda’s father died on 9/ll as if in sympathy for those who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks.
Doug offered a Happy Dollar as he has learned that Vermont has a large group of Peace Corps alumni who might be interested in the Partnership for Peace. Angelina joyfully gave a HD for all the loving and understanding Rotarians supporting her as she navigates the vagaries of motherhood.
President Caroline rose with a fist full of dollars: two for polio plus; two for Angelina’s challenge to balance the demands of motherhood and her professional life; another for her stepson Xavier who has taken a position teaching humanities at the Tunbridge Central School, starting a licensure program and moving out of the house; and one more HD because Dan is here!
Let Them Eat Cake In celebration of Dan’s upcoming nuptials when he will wed Phayvanh Luekhamhan, President Caroline presented gifts and a cake. Rotarians expressed a variety of congratulatory messages and ate cake. Best wishes to Phayvanh and congratulations to Dan!

The Main Event
President Caroline led an initial discussion about celebrating our 100th Anniversary. Among the ideas suggested were: Establish a Legacy Fund
Achieve Rotary Foundation 100% giving
Install a Barre Rotary Granite Stone engraved with the Four Way Test
Institute a 1000 hours of service challenge depicted by using a bean jar
Present Barre City Council with a summary of our first 100 years
Request that the Vermont Legislature do a Proclamation
Have a black tie banquet or reception
Have a community picnic at Currier Park
Write an article for Rotary magazine
Create a video for public broadcast
Those with the most support seemed to be: the Legacy Fund; RI Foundation 100% giving; the 1000 hours service challenge; the community picnic and the Barre Rotary Stone. Other ideas are welcome as are volunteers to join the Centennial Committee. Please contact Caroline or Dan Barlow if you are interested.
