Gathered in the former Jockey Hollow Pizza venue and now the home of Arcana, ten Rotarians and seven guests joined in harmony to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, from the heart and without a flag. President Eddie expressed gratitude for the food, the gathering of Rotarians, friends, employees and businessmen and the return of winter.
Guests:Don Heuerman; Linda Kiniry; Jan Spargo; Robert Hutchins; Rusty Valsangiacomo; Brandon St-Cyr; and Dan Flanders.
Linda Kiniry Becomes a Paul Harris Fellow
Lunch, a special lenten meal being enjoyed by many, was interrupted for an important announcement as Tony called Linda Kiniry to come forth. Tony explained that the Barre Rotary Club was awarding Linda a Paul Harris Fellow and he continued with a brief history of Paul Harris and the founding of Rotary. Tony was joined by Karl to present the award in recognition of her many contributions to our club’s projects, specifically the mural and the Barre Art Splash. Linda graciously accepted and exclaimed: “It was fun!”
Since Last We Met
Because of time constraints, there was no Secretary’s Report at the meeting, but it is-- here!
No birthdays or anniversaries.
On this day in history: Today is Valentine’s Day, the feast day of St. Valentine, a priest and physician who was martyred about 270 ce in Rome. The tradition of exchanging greetings of love on Valentine's Day is based on the legend that Valentine had signed a letter to his jailer's daughter, with whom he had fallen in love, “from your Valentine.”
On this day in history: In 1929 members of Al Capone’s gang of bootleggers massacred a rival gang run by George Moran in Chicago during the Prohibition era.
The Arcana Workshop
The mission:
“Arcana creates exhibits, sculptures, models and custom fabrications to help our clients tell stories and engage the public. We're passionate about making immersive art that gives people a memorable experience. We thrive on collaboration and creative problem-solving. From concept design through final installation, Arcana is your complete creative partner.”
President Eddie introduced Mike Turner, owner of the Arcana Workshop, who provided us with a picture of the history and development of the company from its first facility in Essex to its current location, the former home of Jockey Hollow Pizza. He explained, with the use of a model, how a mold is made for a race car, one of the most popular sculptures of the Barre Art Splash. He entertained us with anecdotes of various fabrication projects for such clients as Ben & Jerry’s, Cabot Cheese, Disney, Casella and several museums including the Sullivan Museum & History Center at Norwich University. He and his team have created life-size dinosaurs, an airplane, gondolas, a truck and a 6’10” alien just to name a few. After Mike answered a few questions, Karl corralled us into the workshop for a closer look at some of the projects, past and present, created by the small group of creative artists dedicated to fulfilling the mission of Arcana. Visit their website for more information and great photos. (www.arcanaworkshop.com)
Rotarians and guests thoroughly enjoyed Mike’s talk and the tour of Arcana and left with a little more knowledge of a small business making an important contribution to the community.
Until next time, that's all Rotarians.....
