President’s Ed’s Elucidation

President Ed shone a spotlight on numerous District and Rotary programs at the 11/13/19 Barre Rotary Club meeting.
President Ed noted that the recent District 7850 newsletter highlighted the Rotary Peace Fellowships and showcased Rachel Brooks from Massachusetts who recently completed a PeacePaste Scholarship in England.
November is Rotary Foundation month.  Rotary International encourages each Rotarian to donate $100 each year to the Rotary Foundation, which supports the End Polio Now campaign and other extraordinary good works by Rotary International and our Clubs.  President Ed urged Barre Rotarians to live up to the $100 Rotary Foundation challenge in the month of November.
President Ed then brought our meeting around to more local events.  Milne Travel is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and President Ed recalled when the Agency started out when he was a child.  It is nice to see a long term Barre Agency still going strong!

Guest Palooza

President Ed then introduced our three guests:  Paul Hutchins, a guest of Bob Pope’s; Matt Durgin, our RYLA student speaker; and Sue Chickering, a guidance counselor from SHS.

Since last we met…..
In his inimitable way, Rotarian Bruce Fischer delivered our Secretary’s Report.  Bruce noted NO birthdays, wedding anniversaries or Club anniversaries in the past week.  He cheered us up, however, with some American history.  On November 13 1775, Continental Army Brigadier General Richard Montgomery took Montreal, Canada without opposition.

From our Barre Rotary Bulletin on Nov. 13, 1925:

Do something for somebody always,
Whatever be your creed,
There’s nothing on earth can help you,
So much as a kindly deed.

Well played, Barre Rotarians of yesteryear!

Tribute to Montpelier Rotarian Fred Cook

Barre Rotary took a moment to honor the passing of Montpelier Rotarian, former District Governor and former Legislator Fred Cook on 11/11/19.  Fred was warmly remembered by many in the room as a gentle soul and gentleman.  President Ed recalled his advice and support when our current President was President of the Montpelier Rotary Club.  Fred Cook had perfect attendance for 50 years at the Montpelier Rotary Club up until his health prevented his continuing attendance.  In both spirit and deed, Fred Cook modeled the Rotarian Four Way Test.  Rest in peace, Fred.  You will be missed.

Happy Dollars Abound

Perhaps due to Tony Campos’s absence, our members shared more happy dollars than fines this week.  Past President Liane shared five happy dollars for being back to a meeting after work-related absences, for her son Justin’s independence and maturity in living in his own apartment, for his impending graduation in Spring 2020 with a Criminal Justice Degree, and for Justin landing an internship with the Barre City PD.  The future looks bright indeed for Justin!
Elizabeth gave a few happy dollars for her father’s slow but steady recovery over the past few months, which has allowed her also to return to a Rotary meeting after some period of absence.

12/14 Christmas Party/Coat Fundraiser Donation Member George Milne gave a heartfelt speech in support of a donation of $1,000 to the World Santa Coat fund, which donates new coats provided by Lenny’s at cost to needy kids and adults in Central Vermont as identified by the Salvation Army.  Member Caroline made that motion, seconded by George, and the Barre Rotary has approved a $1,000 contribution for the project again this year.  We will be having our Christmas coat driver/gift wrapping and Barre Rotary Christmas Potluck Party from 10 am to 1 pm at the Vermont Granite Museum on Saturday, December 14th.  Please come, lend your good cheer and your good works to this annual celebration and project!

The Main Event

RYLA graduate and SHS Junior Matt Durgin gave Barre Rotary a warm thanks for its support of his attendance at RYLA in June 2019.  Matt learned elements of leadership and teamwork from his RYLA experience, which further enhanced the skills that he has already learned as a member of the National Guard program at SHS.  Matt envisions a future in the National Guard, with the possibility of attending Norwich or West Point.  We wish Matt well in all his endeavors.
Barre Rotary is currently encouraging the next group of RYLA applicants to attend this wonderful leadership development program held each June at Northern Vermont University.

Odd ‘n Ends

Member Karl Rinker asked the Club for permission to highlight Rock Solid, which is to be held on 12/11 at the Barre Opera House.  This is a new initiative of the Barre Area Development Corporation to feature short films promoting Barre as a wonderful community and city for future business endeavors.   The Club gave its approval and Member Caroline will also make sure this is featured on our FB page as well.
Caroline updated members on the smashing success of our FB.  The last featured story on the Wheelock Service project received over 1200 views and shares.  Member John Steinman urged all Club members to like and share our FB page and our stories, as that generates exponential increases in our shares and likes, which generates additional exposure and support for our good works.

The Lucky Winner

President Ed won the raffle and drew the white ball!  Now we know who to tap for a loan….
