ANNOUNCEMENTS/MOTIONS/REMINDERS
Window Dressers. Eddie is leading the effort to host a Barre event. Eddie and Arthur are signed up to measure windows, and will be meeting with about 12 families. Construction will occur on Nov. 4th.
Bench project on Mathewson Street Playground. DMS is taking on the project and will assist with specs for the bench.
PROGRAM : NICOLAS STORELLICASTRO.
Family immigrated to the US from Argentina (came at 7). Learned English by engaging with the Rotary Reading Club at school. Sister spent a year in school in Germany through a Rotary exchange, and worked a year in Ghana in college and studied again in England for grad school. Rotary has meant a lot to our family.
Interest in government participation. As a Senior, interested in Bush v. Gore and the legal history. Interned in college with a state rep in Colorado. Performed Masters in Public Admin in Albany New York. Decided to focus on local government.
Worked in education policy at state level in NY, then worked with school bussing coordination. Lived in NY with a 3-year-old and 6-month-old and wife, then found a position in Barre.
Interested in the opportunities and assets in Barre. Goal is to learn the layout and infrastructure of the city, to develop long term plans to sustain services, and to advocate for more affordable housing options.
Eddie asked about the mayor and council, and the relationship to the city manager. There is diversity on the council and the goal is to serve all. Nicolas is hopeful the issues he wants to focus on are non-partisan and will merit support.
Doug asked as a new perspective, what are Barre’s strengths and weaknesses. Nicolas suggested the strength is our location, particularly in proximity to the state capital and outlying towns. We have great community assets such as the opera house, great restaurants, lots of parking, and the auditorium. Finally, we have great civic participation in the city through volunteering and elected positions.
